The Challenge

For years, Resideo managed its large residential demand response portfolio in the Texas Emergency Response Service (ERS) program using manual processes when called upon to dispatch that necessitated large time commitments from its core team. Operations relied on receiving phone calls to schedule or cancel grid events, often requiring multiple Resideo Grid Services team members to monitor the program after hours. The team faced significant strain on personnel and resources as it expanded the hours its portfolio participated in the ERS program and looked to further scale its virtual power plant (VPP) operations.

The Solution

Resideo moved its portfolio of smart thermostats participating in the Texas ERS program to the Leap platform and automated dispatching operations through Leap’s API. Integrating with Leap’s Dispatch API enabled the Resideo Grid Services team to receive automated dispatch signals about grid events through webhook push notifications, replacing the need for manual phone calls for scheduling.

This integration helped Resideo achieve 5x year-over-year meter and revenue growth on the Leap platform from summer 2022 to summer 2023. By automating dispatch notifications, Resideo realized operational efficiencies and reduced overhead. The team required fewer staff to monitor market conditions and make decisions regarding event parameters, enabling the team to be able to spend less time on daily operations and more time on strategy and innovation.

API integration also enables Resideo Grid Services to better align their analytics capabilities with the dispatch process. For example, the team leveraged real-time data and predictive analytics to make decisions about configuring thermostat settings during grid events in shoulder seasons.

Leap’s accessible developer portal and straightforward API documentation helped Resideo’s team complete its integration work smoothly and efficiently, with a single engineer finishing both the enrollment and dispatch automation components in just two development sprints (or four weeks). Resources available in Leap’s Knowledge Center, including our Event Prioritization Guide, helped Resideo to automate key decision-making processes and deepen their understanding of energy market complexities.
